Biographical Information[edit]

Basilio Hernandez has been a long-time player in the Czech Extraliga.

Hernandez was 0 for 3 for Sokol Krč in 1999. In 2002, he made his next Extraliga appearance, going 3 for 10 with a double and a walk for Krč Altron. In 2003, he hit .217/.310/.326 for the club. The next year, he batted .325/.374/.422 and was 17th in the Extraliga in average while becoming the starter at catcher. During 2005, the 28-year-old hit .254/.404/.268 while fielding .986. Backing up Michal Břeň for the Czech national team in the 2005 European Championship, he was 1 for 5 and got plunked once. He produced at a .296/.394/.333 clip in '06. He hit .270/.386/.270 in 2007.

With the 2008 Eagles Praha, he batted .396/.463/.458 and stole 9 bases in 9 tries in an outlier season at age 31. He was 6th in the circuit in OBP, third in average and first in runners caught stealing percentage (46.7%). In '09, he hit .288/.368/.394 and fielded .989. During 2010, Hernandez (who is often listed as Barrios in Czech sources) hit .273/.343/.364. He batted .299/.373/.339 for the 2011 Eagles while also playing third base. In 2012, the veteran hit .263/.344/.368.

Basilio was back with the Czech team in the 2012 European Championship after a 7-year hiatus, going 0 for 3 and handling 7 chances error-free while backing up Jan Drabek at third base. In the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he backed up Petr Čech at catcher. In his lone appearance, he entered in the 9th inning and struck out in his lone at-bat, facing Alex Smith.
