Baseball Assistance Team

The Baseball Assistance Team, often abbreviated as B.A.T. is a charitable organization that helps former members of the baseball family who have fallen on tough times because of medical issues or difficulties in adjusting to life after baseball. They focus mainly on players whose career was too short to obtain full pension or medical insurance rights, and on minor leaguers, Negro Leagues players, players from the AAGPBL, coaches, scouts and front office employees who likewise do not have access to an adequate safety net.

Created in 1986 at the instigation of Commissioner Peter Ueberroth, the charity is funded by former players but also the Major League Baseball Players Association and the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Organization, who organize special events such as golf tournaments. Throughout the years, the organization has awarded more than 3,900 grants and more than $38 million "to restore health, pride and dignity to members of the Baseball Family" (as of 2019). It is also supported by Major League Baseball.
