Barry Halper was a limited partner of the New York Yankees and one of the most famous baseball memorabilia collectors of all time. At the time of his retirement from collecting, and subsequent sale of his collection, he owned 1068 game worn uniforms, including one from nearly every member of the Hall of Fame who was a player. He also had an extensive baseball card collection dating from the 19th century and numbering over 500,000. His collection was auctioned by Sotheby's in 1999 for $22 million. The Hall of Fame purchased $5 million in items for its own collection.
Halper was minority owner of the New York Yankees from 1979 until his death.
