Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Barrett Barnes was a supplemental first-round pick in the 2012 amateur draft. His uncle is Anthony Young.

College[edit]

He hit .341/.465/.641 as a college freshman, with 14 homers, 71 runs, 53 RBI and 12 steals (3 times caught) in 57 games. He tied Mike Humphreys' Texas Tech freshman home run record, won Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year. He was named Freshman All-American by Baseball America. He was second in the Big 12 in runs (behind Brodie Greene), 4th in slugging, 5th in walks (40) and tied for 5th in doubles (19). He hit .223/.360/.388 for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League that summer, placing 5th in the league with 22 walks. As a sophomore, he slumped to .290/.414/.509 with 19 steals in 21 tries over 57 games. He was second in the Big 12 in walks (41) and tied for third with 10 home runs. He made All-Conference in the outfield. Back with Falmouth for a second summer, he posted a .233/.319/.367 line.

As a TTU junior, he batted .325/.419/.597 with 53 runs, 49 RBI and 19 steals (in 20 attempts) over 55 games. He was 2nd in the Big 12 in slugging, tied for second in triples (6), tied for third in runs, 4th in total bases (123), tied for 3rd in doubles (17) and tied for 5th in RBI. He was tied for 32nd in NCAA Division I in three-baggers and 50th in slugging. He was All-Conference again.

Minors[edit]

He was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the supplemental first round of the 2012 amateur draft with the 45th overall selection. He was Pittsburgh's second pick, after Mark Appel. The choice was compensation for the loss of Ryan Doumit to free agency. He soon signed and made his pro debut with the State College Spikes on June 18th. In 38 games, he hit .288/.401/.456 with 6 doubles and 5 homers and did not commit an error in center field.
