Biographical Information

Axel Zapata has pitched for the Nicaraguan national team.

In the 2019 U-18 Baseball World Cup, he beat China's Jian Yi but lost a pitching duel to Panama's Noel Suarez. He tied for 9th with 12 K and had a 1.38 ERA. He was 1-1 with a 1.27 ERA in the 2024 U-23 Baseball World Cup, beating South Africa's Robert White and dropping a 1-0 decision to Puerto Rico's Jorhan Laboy. He had a 1.27 ERA and struck out 15 in 11 IP, allowing four hits. He tied Hyun-seok Choi for second in whiffs, behind Laboy.

Making his senior team debut in the 2026 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he did not get into a game as Nicaragua used 11 of their 14 pitchers in sweeping the field.
