Biographical Information[edit]
Art Schult played five seasons in the majors for four different teams. He was in 59 games at first base and 56 in the outfield. He was first with the New York Yankees in 1953, where he only appeared as a pinch-runner, then with the Cincinnati Redlegs in 1956 and 1957. His stint with the Washington Senators later in 1957 gave him most of his big league playing time, and he finished up with the Chicago Cubs in 1959 and 1960. He hit for a .254 average while in the majors.
Dutch Schult served his country as a draftee in the Korean War, missing two full seasons of baseball. Upon his return to the game with the Syracuse Chiefs of the International League in 1953, he struggled to regain his old form. In a few years he began to hit for average once again and soon found his stroke, becoming a power threat that earned him a few trips up to the bigs in his remaining years.
He played for the Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League in 1955, hitting at a .300 average.
His son Jim Schult is in the Mercy College Athletics Hall of Fame. A top slugger in college, Jim was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1981 and played one season of minor league ball. Another son, Ray Schult, played for Pace University.
As of 1994 he lived in Florida. He died in Ocala, FL in 2014, at age 86.
