Biographical Information[edit]
Art Mills was a Detroit Tigers coach from 1944 to 1948. He was the son of former major league pitcher Willie Mills.
He lied about his age to enlist in the United States Navy at the end of World War I; he served on the battleship USS New Mexico after the end of the war, whose mission was to escort a fleet merchant ships down the East Coast, through the Panama Canal, and up the West Coast. he was dismissed at the end of the trip when his true age was discovered. he then returned to his hometown of Utica, NY, where he began to play semi-pro baseball. His success on the diamond got him noticed and he began his pro career with the Binghamton Triplets of the New York-Penn League in 1923, then joined the Barre-Montpelier Hyphens, who played outside organized baseball, later that summer.
