In 1967 and 1968, he was in the Pacific Coast League, then he moved to the American Association in 1969. In His book The Umpire Strikes Back, Ron Luciano said he was promoted to the American League as part of an exchange program with the Mexican League; the two were part of the same umpiring crew in 1975, under crew chief Bill Haller.
