Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Antwaan Randle El was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 14th round of the 1997 Amateur Draft. He did not sign and decided to attend Indiana University on a football scholarship, taking the advice of his parents.

He was later drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round (62nd overall) of the 2002 NFL draft. He spent nine years in the NFL with the Steelers and Washington Redskins as a wide receiver.

In 2016, it was reported that he now regrets playing pro football and would have chosen to play baseball if he had to do it over again. He has memory problems resulting from a concussion and trouble walking down stairs. He also claims that he could still be playing baseball if he had gone that route.

Randle El helped start the Virginia Academy, a Christian high school in Ashburn, VA, where he serves as athletic director. After two years, he scrapped the football program for budgetary reasons, but also said that it had the side benefit of protecting the kids from the violent sport.
