Biographical Information[edit]
Anthony Seigler was the 23rd selection in the 1st round of the 2018 amateur draft, by the New York Yankees. He drew a lot of attention because, in addition to being a switch-hitter, he was also ambidextrous, pitching with both arms while not catching at Cartersville High School in Cartersville, GA. The Yankees drafted him as a catcher and not as a pitcher, however, as he was recognized as one of the best all-around catchers in the draft, thanks to his excellent bat combined with catching skills and excellent athleticism. He had hit .182/.400/.273 for Team USA when they won the 2017 U-18 Baseball World Cup, with 8 walks. He tied for 4th in the event in walks. He signed with the Yankees on June 9th for a signing bonus of $2.8 million.
In his first professional season in 2018, he split his time between the Pulaski Yankees of the Appalachian League and the GCL Yankees West. He hit a combined .266/.379/.342 in 24 games. However, he hit a roadblock in 2019, as he played just 30 games with the Charleston RiverDogs of the South Atlantic League and didn't show much, hitting .175/.328/.206, his ability to draw walks the only positive. After sitting out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he spent 2021 with the Hudson Valley Renegades of the High-A East and hit .219/.324/.391 in 41 games. He showed some improvement in 2022, splitting the season between Hudson Valley and the Tampa Tarpons of the Florida State League. In between the two stops, he hit .236/.405/.369 in 97 games, his unusual slash line the result of drawing 91 walks against just 87 strikeouts. He started the 2023 season in AA with the Somerset Patriots of the Eastern League where he was mainly a back-up due to his lack of hitting. He did get some publicity for playing left-field lefthanded, in contrast to his regular job as a catcher where he was strictly a right-handed thrower.
