Biographical Information

"Griffith's young pitcher, Ambrose Puttman, is six feet three inches, tremendously powerful, and has arms that hang to his knees. He has speed to burn, good shoots, and can hit some as well." - from Sporting Life, April 23, 1904

After his playing career ended, pitcher Ambrose Puttmann ran a shoe store in Cincinnati and was later a liquor store clerk. He died of a heart attack at age 55 while vacationing in New York City.

Puttman had an ERA of 0.90 as a rookie in 1903, although he gave up a number of unearned runs. Each year after that, his ERA increased. Manager Clark Griffith was also a pitcher on the team, and kept Puttman for three years. When Puttman originally came up in 1903, he was one of the youngest players on a much older team.

In his last major league season, with the 1906 St. Louis Cardinals, he was still one of the younger pitchers. Babe Adams, a year younger, was a rookie on the team.
