Biographical Information[edit]

Ambiorix Burgos played three seasons in the majors.

Signed by the Kansas City Royals as a 16-year-old in November 2000, Burgos made his pro debut the next summer for the DSL Royals. After going 7-11 for the Burlington Bees in 2004, he reached the majors in 2005, going 3-5 with a 3.98 ERA and 2 saves in 59 relief outings. He was the Royals closer the following year, notching 18 saves but posting a 5.52 ERA. After the season, he was dealt to the New York Mets for Brian Bannister. Burgos split 2007 between the Mets and the minors, going 1-0 with a 3.42 ERA at the big league level. However, he struggled with arm injuries and underwent Tommy John surgery late in the season. He made 8 minor league appearances in 2008.

After 2008, Ambiorix was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend, and a month later was indicted in the Dominican Republic following a hit-and-run accident that killed two women. He was ultimately sentenced to nine months in jail for the assault, but the hit-and-run charges were dropped. Burgos faced additional legal problems in 2010, when he was charged with the kidnapping and attempted murder of his ex-wife. He made 23 final appearances, pitching in the Mexican League, in 2013.
