Biographical Information[edit]
Alvaro Cañarte was the first Ecuadorian player to sign with a major league team.
Cañarte played baseball in Ecuador; he moved to the Dominican Republic at age 18 to advance his game. The Detroit Tigers saw him in action there in 1986 and signed him. He was ineffective for the 1987 Bristol Tigers (29 H, 24 R, 19 ER, 6 BB, 2 HB, 3 WP, 7 K in 12 IP, no decisions, a 14.25 ERA), his only season in the US.
