Biographical Information[edit]
Alex Smith was named by the Chicago Cubs as a major league coach responsible for data development and process for the 2023 season, a role he continued in 2024.
As can be guessed by his title, Alex did not come up through the playing ranks. Instead, he obtained a bachelor's degree in applied science from Cornell University in 2015, while also working as a baseball operations intern with the New York Mets during the summer of 2014. He then joined the Cubs in January 2015 [1], at a time when General Manager Theo Epstein wanted to change the culture of the organization by introducing analytics in what had been a very conservative team. He worked in the baseball operations department for five years with increasing levels of responsibility. Smith was a Baseball Operations Assistant in 2016-2018 and Baseball Operations Coordinator in 2019-2020. In 2021 his title changed to Coordinator for Major League Data and Development followed by Assistant Director for Major League Data and Development in 2022.
Smith was promoted to a coaching position in November of 2022 with the mission of creating a link between the analytics department and the coaching staff.
