He began his professional career that year with the Casper Ghosts of the Pioneer League, where he went 3-5, 5.55 in 13 games. Moving to the Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League in 2012, he went 6-8 in 19 starts, pitching 123 innings with a K/W ratio of 83/28. On December 4, 2012, he was traded to the Houston Astros with fellow pitcher Alex White in return for reliever Wilton Lopez. Gillingham attempted a comeback in the independent leagues in 2014, when he went 2-2, 3.57 in 4 starts for the Traverse City Beach Bums of the Frontier League.
