Biographical Information[edit]

Al Raffo, although he pitched only one season in the majors, was in there a lot. He appeared in 45 games, only one short of the team leader for games appeared as a pitcher.

Raffo was born in San Francisco, CA and went to high school in Los Angeles, CA. His entire minor league career was in the Philadelphia Phillies organization. He went 11-7 for the Magic Valley Cowboys in 1963, 14-10 for the Eugene Emeralds in 1964, 8-5 for the Macon Peaches in 1966, 12-6 for the Reading Phillies in 1967, and 11-7 for the San Diego Padres in 1968.

He was with the major league Philies in 1969 at age 27, the same age as teammate Dick Allen.

The book Baseball in Chattanooga states that Raffo, who played for the Chattanooga Lookouts in 1965, was later an area educator. The Marion County High School (Jasper, TN) site says that Raffo got his college degree after his baseball days, and became a teacher. He was also baseball coach and the high school team's field was renamed "Raffo Field" in 2001. Raffo became principal of the school in 2004.
