Biographical Information[edit]
Al Mattern pitched five years for the Boston Braves, from 1908 to 1912. During his time with them, they were called the Doves, then the Rustlers, and finally the Braves. He was gone by the time the Miracle Braves team won the pennant.
Mattern pitched over 300 innings in both 1909 and 1910, far more than any other pitcher on the team. After the majors, he spent three years with the Montreal Royals; he had also been at Montreal before he came to the majors.
The SABR biography indicates he was a semi-pro pitcher and railroad agent before his professional ballplaying career. He was a spitball pitcher. During his career, he also worked on a farm during the winter, and sold produce. He played semi-pro ball after his professional career, including, eventually, on a team with his son.
