Biographical Information[edit]
Al Heist had a long minor league career before reaching the big leagues in 1960 after the Chicago Cubs acquired him from the Milwaukee Braves. He split time in centerfield with Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn in 1961, with Heist appearing in 99 games while Ashburn appeared in 62. And, like Ashburn (who was picked by the New York Mets), Heist was selected in the expansion draft (by the Houston Colt .45s) before the 1962 season.
After his playing career ended, Heist was a Houston Astros coach in 1966 and 1967 and a member of the San Diego Padres staff in 1980. In between, he was a scout for the Chicago Cubs until 1974, the Padres from 1975-1979 and 1981-1984 and the San Francisco Giants beginning in 1985.
