Biographical Information[edit]
Al Cohen umpired a pair of National League games on May 21-22, 1976 as a fill-in umpire. His services were required because the regular umpires had refused to cross a picket line put up by striking Three Rivers Stadium workers in Pittsburgh, PA. After the regular crew missed the May 21nd contest, the National League applied to obtain a court order to force the umpires back to work, but this did not come through too late to enable the umpires to be ready for the start of the next day's game, which was played in the afternoon. So Cohen and Joe Schratz got to a work a second game, with two new crew members. It turned out to be a 16-inning marathon between the visiting Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates.
