Biographical Information[edit]
Akira Takahashi dropped out of college as a sophomore to join the new Kokutetsu Swallows. He won the first game in franchise history and was 10-15 with a 5.76 his rookie year (1950). His 178 walks (in 200 innings) led the new Pacific League. In '51, Takahashi improved to 10-11 with a 4.06 ERA and "only" 112 walks in 163 1/3 innings. In 1952, now 20 years of age, the southpaw slipped to 2-6, 4.72. The next year, Akira went 0-2 with a 3.12 ERA in just 26 innings of work.
1954 was perhaps Takahashi's best season - 7-11, 3.26, though his nine wild pitches led the PL. In '55, Akira went 0-7 with a 7.54 ERA and he finished his career with an 0-1, 3.27 1956 year. Overall, he went 29-53 with a 4.63 ERA in 178 games, walking 475 in 691 innings.
