Biographical Information

Outfielder Ab Wright had two stints in the majors but was a big star in the minors, winning the American Association Triple Crown in 1940.

After playing pro football in the NFL, Wright joined the Minneapolis Millers in 1931 and remained with the club for four seasons, hitting .353 in 1934. He was then a member of the 1935 Cleveland Indians, appearing in 67 games at the age of 29. He then returned to the minors and was with the Montreal Royals in 1938.

Wright rejoined the Millers in 1939 and had a monster year the following year, at age 34. He hit .369 with 39 home runs and 159 RBI and captured the Triple Crown (a feat that 19 year old Ted Williams had accomplished two years earlier with the club, hitting .366 with 43 homers and 142 RBI). On July 4th, Wright had his best day of the season. After hitting a home run in the first game of a doubleheader against the St. Paul Saints at Nicollet Park, he slugged four more and had a triple in the second game.

Wright remained with the Millers through 1944, leading the American Association with 26 home runs in 1941. He returned to the majors with the 1944 Boston Braves at age 38. He was fifth on the team in home runs although he played in just 71 games and had fewer than 200 at-bats.
