Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver was taken in the 7th round of the 2021 amateur draft; his signing bonus was $997,500. He began his career with the FCL Braves in 2021, going 0-1 with an 8.64 ERA in 4 starts. In 8 1/3 innings, he had 16 strikeouts. With the Augusta GreenJackets in 2022, he was 3-4 with a 5.11 ERA in 17 starts. He had 103 Ks in 68 2/3 innings.

He made his major league debut with the Braves on June 4, 2023, pitching 2 1/3 hitless innings in relief against the Arizona Diamondbacks. His next outing on June 9th was his first major league start, against the Washington Nationals. He gave up 2 runs, neither of the earned, on 3 hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 3-2 win.
