In 2018, Pat Neshek became the first major league player to wear number 93 in a game. He had wanted to use his usual number, 17, when joining the Philadelphia Phillies, but this had already been issued to rising star Rhys Hoskins, so he decided instead to break new ground. Using Baseball-Reference.com as a research tool, he settled upon 93 as he found out it was one of the few remaining two-digit numbers never to have been worn by a major league player.
