History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1933 Akron Grays (also listed in some sources as the Black Tyrites) were the third attempt at an Ohio team in the new NNL, following the Columbus Blue Birds and Cleveland Giants (and retaining most of Cleveland's personnel). Like their predecessors, they did not last out the season.

Akron did have solid pitching as a team, with a 107 ERA+, but it was a one-man effort. Bert Hunter was 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA (215 ERA+) while Spoon Carter went 0-3 with a 7.59 ERA (57 ERA+); no other pitcher had more than one start.

The offense was led by RF Lou Dials (.375/.459/.438, 140 OPS+) and C Clarence Palm (.267/.313/.533, 121 OPS+) while SS Townsend Tapley hit .313/.389/.375 for a 104 OPS+. It fell off significantly from there as their #4 regular was CF Joe Ware with a 67 OPS+ (.219/.286/.344).
