History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1932 Montgomery Grey Sox had their only season as a major league team, because it was the only season the Negro Southern League was a major circuit. They finished squarely in the middle of the pack at 23-25-1. Box scores have only been found for 25 of their 48 games (as of 2/18/21)

They had a 100 ERA+ for those 25 games, good for third in the NSL behind the Monroe Monarchs and Nashville Elite Giants. Everett Nelson was their ace at 4-1, 1.76 (178 ERA+) followed by G. Mitchell (1-4, 2.42, 129 ERA+). Lefty Calhoun was their other regular hurler at 2-4, 5.23 (60 ERA+).

The team OPS+ was 81 in those games. Four position players had an OPS+ between 104 and 107: RF Frank Lewis 107 (.303/.354/.329, 19 R in 22 G), CF Joe Mitchell 105 (.287/.311/.368), SS Matt Carlisle 105 (.283/.320/.359) and 3B Matthew Jackson 104 (.290/.324/.350). Rounding out the starters were C Paul Hardy (.220/.256/.280, 62 OPS+, 18 R in 24 G), 1B Earl Gurley (.238/.300/.288, 78 OPS+), 2B Oran Frazier (.229/.281/.277, 69 OPS+, 16 R in 22 G) and LF Frank Ray (.182/.209/.182, 19 OPS+).
