Now largely forgotten because they finished in second place in the National League, the 1886 Detroit Wolverines were still a formidable team, going 87-36-3 for a winning percentage of .690. They still finished 2 1/2 games back of the Chicago White Stockings, who are among the small number of teams to have a winning percentage over .700 in a full season.

The Wolverines got off to a great start at home, as they won their first 18 home games. This was not a record because the 1880 Chicago White Stockings had started off 21-0 at home, but the number has not been matched by any other team since, with the 2023 Tampa Bay Rays coming closest.
