Biographical Information[edit]

Štěpán Havlíček signed with the Tampa Bay Rays in January 2010. The 16-year-old Czech hurler had not yet appeared in the top Czech league, the Extraliga, at that point. He is believed to be the first player signed by the Rays out of Europe. The scout was John Gilmore.

Havlíček participated in the MLB European Academy in 2008. He had pitched 11 1/3 shutout innings in the 2009 European Junior Championship, fanning 13. In the 2009 World Youth Championship, he had gone 0-3 with a 9.82 ERA and 25 hits in 14 2/3 IP as the most-used Czech hurler. In his US debut, he pitched in three games for the 2010 GCL Rays, with one hit and no runs in four innings. He struck out two and walked one. With the GCL Rays in 2011, he was 0-1 with a 4.80 ERA in 11 relief appearances and in 2012, also with the GCL Rays, he was 3-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 11 games (three starts). He pitched for the Princeton Rays in 2013 and went 0-0 with a 5.86 ERA in 13 games.
