Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Ángel Chivilli (family name pronounced "che-VEE-yee") was signed as an international free agent by the Colorado Rockies organization on July 30, 2018 - two days after his 16th birthday. His debut season was 2019; because his birthday is after July 1, this is considered his age 16 season. He made 12 starts split between the Rockies' two teams in the Dominican Summer League and put up an aggregate ERA of 4.80 with a 1.267 WHIP. He struck out 45 men in 45 innings, walked 10 and gave up 3 home runs.
The minor leagues were wiped out the next year, 2020, stemming from the coronavirus pandemic. Chivilli was back in the Dominican Summer League in 2021 and made 11 appearances on the mound, 8 starts. His ERA dropped to 3.49 and his WHIP fell to 1.164. His hit rate, walk rate, home run rate, and strikeout rate all improved as well. He began 2022 in the Arizona Complex League, but was moved up to the low-A California League after 9 relief appearances in which he dominated. His 1.15 ERA and 0.894 WHIP were accompanied by 23 strikeouts over 4 walks in 15 2/3 innings of work; he allowed only 10 hits and no home runs. After moving up to the Cal League's Fresno Grizzlies, he remained in the bullpen and tossed 25 innings over 23 games. His ERA was 2.88, he stuck out 28 batters and allowed a lone home run. His WHIP went up to 1.280, mostly in part to a H/9IP ratio going from 5.7 in the ACL to 9.4 in the Cal League.
He was moved up to the advanced-A Spokane Indians of the Northwest League for the 2023 season. His first two months were dreadful, finishing May with an ERA of 8.66, but on the bright side he converted 3 of his 4 save opportunities. He soon settled into a role as the Indians' most oft-used closer, and while his season's ERA dropped nearly two points in June, he blew half of his save opportunities (3 saves in 6 chances; 4.91 ERA for the month). July was much, much better - a 2.92 ERA (which brought his season's ERA to 5.84), a .200 opponent's batting average, 16 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings, only 2 walks, and having saved all 7 save opportunities. He was rocky again in August (6.97 ERA 3 blown saves with only 2 saves), but was called up to the AA Eastern League after two effective outings against the Everett AquaSox to begin September. For the season in the Lilac City, his ERA was 5.84 over 50 games and 57 innings, he accumulated a 4-9 record with 17 saves (8 blown saves), 65 strikeouts, 20 walks, and 9 home runs surrendered. He also hit 8 batters and uncorked 11 wild pitches. He appeared in three games for the Hartford Yard Goats, allowing 1 earned run over 4 innings without factoring in a decision.
After being added to the Rockies' 40-man roster and taking part in major league spring training, he began 2024 back with the Yard Goats. After a very good April (6 appearances, 7 2/3 innings, 1-0 with 1 save and 0 blown saves, 1 earned run and 8 strikeouts), he was recalled by the Rockies on May 3rd. However, he was returned to Hartford on May 6th before appearing in a single ballgame (he had been assigned uniform #57). He returned to make his debut on June 3rd, when he pitched the final two innings of a 13-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds; he gave up 2 runs on 4 hits, both coming on a homer by Tyler Stephenson in the 9th.
