Most Consecutive Appearances in a Loss to Start a Career

16th August 2010

In another post, reader ES made the following observation:

Not only did Scott Ruffcorn not win any games over his Major League career, his team lost all 30 Major League games he ever appeared in. That is quite a feat to pitch that many games and never be involved in a victory.....

Which naturally leads to the question of the record for such a feat.

Using the PI pitching streak finder, we can search for consecutive appearances by a pitcher in a team loss to start a career. Here are the results:

Walker Cress started his career by appearing in 32 consecutive losses, but his career was 33 games long.  Like Ruffcorn, Charlie Bicknell's streak lasted his entire career, making them the co-(post 1920) record holders for this category.

These are longest win streaks among games with a decision. Pavano, for example, has a few no-decision games sandwiched into his streak and those games are not counted in the stats above. He's registered 8 wins since his last loss.

Sabathia and Jimenez both had their streaks broken fairly recently, although notice that Jimenez has had two streaks long enough to make this list. Amazing.

Notice, too, that Tyler Clippard makes it!

Mat Latos has the next-longest active streak.

Rolling Down The Rhodes

28th June 2010

I noticed this news yesterday -

With his scoreless seventh inning Saturday night against the Indians, Reds left-hander Arthur Rhodes continued a dominating scoreless streak of 33 straight appearances and 30 innings.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Rhodes’ 33-appearance scoreless streak tied the Major-League record shared by Mark Guthrie and Mike Myers. His 30-inning scoreless streak is the longest by a reliever in the Major Leagues this season and the longest by a Reds reliever since Ted Abernathy threw 30.0 consecutive scoreless innings in 1967.

And, the first thing I thought of - seeing Rhodes, Guthrie and Myers - was "Yeah, it's easy to pull this off as a LOOGY - facing one or two batters a game. But, how about guys who face three or more batters a game?" And, thanks to Play Index, we have the answer. Here's the "PI data available" streaks for most games in a row facing 3+ batters and not allowing any runs:
