2008 hitting streaks

23rd February 2009

Here are the longest hitting streaks (consecutive games with at least 1 hit) in 2008:

I thought maybe that if we limited it to just home games, there might be a longer streak, perhaps by a Red Sox player, but no:

So, laugh, a Red Sox player had the longest hit streak on the road. Go figure on that one. Also, Ichiro makes both lists--too bad he didn't have the streaks at the same time or he might have ripped off a 40-gamer.

Home Runs – One at a Time

15th February 2009

In a recent comment - aawillsher asked the following question:

"I was recently wondering about a related question — what is the most HR’s hit by a player (season or career) who never hit more than one in a game?"

Using an obscure feature of the PI Batting Streak finder, we can attempt to answer this question.

Step 1:  On the bottom right corner select "Choose additional, advanced criteria:" and set HR>=1. This limits our pool to games in which a player has homered.

Step 2:  On the top right set HR=1.

Step 3: For a single season check the box "to start a season"

We may have to manually remove some results if a player had his first multiple home run  game late in a year.

Here are the results (1956-2008) to start a  single season:

+-----------------+-----------+-----------+-----+------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
 Mike Piazza 1999-04-06 1999-10-02 40 162 55 71 3 0 40 80 7 18 1 1 .438 .492 1.198 1.690 NYM

 Hank Aaron 1963-04-11 1963-09-09 39 152 58 74 3 0 39 83 19 22 6 1 .487 .545 1.276 1.821 MLN

 Willie Mays 1966-04-12 1966-10-02 37 159 47 59 2 0 37 69 21 9 1 1 .371 .408 1.082 1.490 SFG

 Alex Rodriguez 2008-04-02 2008-09-17 35 132 61 68 7 0 35 66 26 23 5 1 .515 .595 1.364 1.959 NYY
 Ron Kittle 1983-04-10 1983-10-01 35 135 43 54 1 1 35 67 35 13 2 0 .400 .447 1.200 1.647 CHW
 Mike Schmidt 1982-05-02 1982-10-03 35 130 47 55 5 0 35 64 21 21 2 2 .423 .494 1.269 1.763 PHI

Aaron snapped his streak with a 2 HR game on September 10th. The other players all hit 35 or more home runs without hitting 2 or more in one game.

To figure out the career leader involves a little more work. (You can't simply check off to start a career because the PI limits the search to the players first 400 games)  However, we can do the same search as before and not limit it to the beginning of a season.

This yields the following result.

StreakStart Streak End Games AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SO BB SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS Teams

 Rusty Staub 1973-09-21 1981-09-08 124 493 160 213 19 3 124 241 16 48 0 0 .432 .480 1.237 1.717 NYM-DET-MON-TEX-NYM

 Marquis Grissom 1989-09-11 1998-09-09 109 480 159 211 16 4 109 180 40 26 26 7 .440 .467 1.171 1.638 MON-ATL-CLE-MIL

 Cal Ripken 1985-10-05 1990-05-09 102 419 140 176 16 1 102 183 39 38 2 2 .420 .466 1.193 1.659 BAL
 Lou Piniella 1969-04-20 1984-05-18 102 397 134 176 16 2 102 184 27 18 1 3 .443 .464 1.264 1.728 KCR-NYY
 Carl Yastrzemski 1977-06-19 1983-09-10 102 403 141 184 16 1 102 206 30 40 2 2 .457 .504 1.261 1.765 BOS

Rusty Staub had the longest streak (1956-2008) of home run games with just one. However, Staub did have 12  multiple homerun games in his career.  Marquis Grissom's first 109 home runs were all hit in different games. However, after that he had 9 multiple homerun games. Similary, the streaks of Ripken and Yastrzremski were oddities in careers full of mutiple home run games. This leaves Lou Pinella as the only player (1956-2008) to have hit more than 100 career home runs, but never 2 in the same game.

There are some pretty surprising numbers on here:

  • Fischer's streak comprised 71 innings over 11 starts, an average of about 6.5 innings per start. In 1962, that was nothing special. that he went 2-8 in those 11 starts is a bit surprising.
  • Jimmy Key managed only 33 IP in his 7-game streak, or less than 5 innings per start. Yet he still managed 3 wins (despite averaging fewer than the required number innings to win a game.)
  • News flash: Greg Maddux was really good. See you in Cooperstown in 5 years.
  • Brian Tollberg? Raise your hand if you would ever have guessed he'd made this list. He was a great control pitcher, averaging about 2.4 walks per 9 innings for his rather short career.

3rd October 2008

Here are the leaders for most consecutive games with a homer to start the post-season. So this doesn't count each series separately, but rather the first series that a given player played in each year.

Manny Ramirez has homered in the first two games this year (although he doesn't show up on the above list as of yet.) He has a chance to become just the 7th player to homer in his first 3 post-season games of a particular season if he goes deep again against the Cubs in Game 3 of the NLDS.

26th August 2008

Mike Pelfrey pitched his second consecutive complete game win for the Mets yesterday. He has a way to go for the franchise record, though:

Whiffing Marlins

5th August 2008

Whiz posted this on the suggestions page and it seemed worthy of its own thread (I took the liberty to add links to the searches):

I was doing some searches on longest team batting streaks and found that Florida currently has has at least 8 SO in each of the last 13 games, the longest such streak in the PI database (i.e., since 1956).

They also currently have streaks of 15 games with 7 or more SO (longest is 17 by the 1996 Tigers) and 4 games with 10 or more SO (longest is 6 by the 1972 and 2004 Reds and 1997 Giants). It’s not surprising since the Marlins strike out 8.7 times per game, by far the most in the majors, and they are on pace to beat the Brewers total of 1399 in a season.

The streak for 6 or more SO is safe for now — the longest is by the Rays last year, an amazing 47 games (2nd longest is only 28, “achieved” by Florida earlier this year).

Another oddity: the weekend series between Florida and Colorado is (as far as I can tell) the only three-game series since 1956 in which both teams had at least 10 SO each in all three games.

Tim Redding Part 2

13th July 2008

Tim Redding finally got a win on Friday night ending his streak of 9 consecutive starts without a decision. (1 short of the (post 1956?) record ).

However, Redding did pitch 6 innings in that game, keeping alive an unprecedented (at least since 1956) streak. Since April 13 Redding has made 18 starts. In every single one of those starts he has pitched at least 5 innings, but no more than six and 1/3. This by far shatters the (post 1956) record of 13 consecutive starts.

Here are the leaders:

The full list is here.

Many of the top streaks are ongoing. Bartlett, Pierre, and Gathright all have yet to hit a homer this year. Theriot hit one in mid-April but none since.

One guy who really sticks out to me is Julio Lugo. He's had double-digit homers in 4 out of his 8 seasons prior to this year but has managed just 1 so far this year. And it's not like he's doing anything else with the bat considering his absolutely horrid .676 OPS. Boston has made numerous excellent player acquisitions in the last several years (coming to mind right away are Matsuzaka, Beckett, Lowell, Okajima, and even Nancy J.D. Drew seems to be turning it around) but in Lugo they've been saddled with one of the worst players in the major leagues.

Isn't it crazy to see a list like this? 20 years ago, lots of guys (especially middle infielders) would go the whole season with 0, 1, or 2 homers. To see streaks of 80+ games wouldn't be that rare. Now, we expect every guy to have at least a handful every year.
