Roy Halladay did it again last night, pitching 7 innings in the Blue Jays' eventual 12-10 loss (their 9th straight--ouch!) He's gone at least 7 innings in every one of his 11 starts so far this year, but as you might except he's a long way from the record for most starts with 7+ IP to start a season:

A note on Bob Gibson's incredible 1968 season. Those 34 starts to start the season with 7 IP? Those were all of his starts that year. Yeah, that's right...the guy threw at least 7 innings in every start. In fact, he completed 28 of those 34 games (and also won the Cy Young, MVP, ERA and strikeout titles, and threw 13 shutouts.)
So Halladay has a long, long way to go to approach that post-1954 record (don't hold your breath.) But the only guys ahead of him from the last 20 seasons are Roger Clemens, 14 in 1992, and Curt Schilling, 13 in 2001.

Which big league pitcher, since 1954, has the longest streak of pitching at least 7 innings in a game from the start of his career? According to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Pitching Streak Finder, here's the answer:

Amazing. If not for this game, the streak would have been 14 games for McClain. For more on Joe, click here.

Nice to see Dontrelle Willis get back to winning. With his victory the other day, he snapped the second-longest winless start streak of his career:

John Lackey is getting set to pitch against the Mariners and presumably he will throw more than 25 pitches. If he doesn't, he will join a group of 3 other pitchers since 1988 who have gone 2 consecutive games, both starts, without throwing more than 25 pitches:

Last year in 2008, Brad Lidge had an amazing season, finishing a perfect 41-for-41 in saves while striking out 11.9 batters per nine innings. His ERA was 1.95, close to a career best.
This year, it's a very different story.
He recently broke this horrible streak of most consecutive games by a reliever allowing at least 1 ER:

His strikeout rate (9.7 per 9 IP) is still good so far this year but his walk rate (5.4 per 9) and hit rate (12.4 per 9!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) are career-worsts so far. Oh and his HR per 9 is 2.7 per 9 innings, as compared to a career value of 0.8.
Looking at his career splits, June and July have typically been Lidge's best months, allowing the lowest opposing BA and OBP.
Let's see if he can turn things around.

Damon is the hottest hitter in baseball right now. Following up on yesterday's post (including very helpful comments by reader leatherman) here are all the times since 1954 that a player has had 10 straight games with at least one extra-base hit and one run scored:

This past Sunday was a big day for Albert Pujols. When he walked in the top of the 3rd inning, he avoided tying his career high for most consecutive games without reaching base at all. What's his career high? Would you believe just 3 games?

To me, it's incredible that the guy has never had 4 games in a row where he hasn't reached base.

Man-Ram has 2 different 4-game streaks and a whole bunch of 3-game jobs.
To be fair, Ramirez and Helton have played for a lot longer than Pujols, so Albert still has a shot at his own 4-game streak.

Johnny Damon is on a tear and you know what that means: this must be his contract year.
Anyway, he's got the longest streak of consecutive games with an extra-base hit so far this season (with 9) and it's still going:

There aren't a lot of games on the schedule tonight, but one worth watchnig will be the Nationals at the Giants as Ryan Zimmerman enters with a 28-game hit streak, longest in the majors since Moises Alou's 30-game job in 2007.

The full list since 1954 is below. This has already been posted recently, but Zack Greinke has moved up with his streak of 6. This is most consecutive starts won at the beginning of a season (it ignores any relief appearances.)
Brandon Webb rung off 9 in a row last year. Plus you might remember Josh Beckett winning 7 in a row in 2007 and Cliff Lee winning 6 in a row last year. Greinke has really good numbers so far compared to any of these guys and I would love to see him break the record, as unlikely as that is.
