Johnny Damon’s extra base hits

Posted by Andy on May 14, 2009

Johnny Damon is on a tear and you know what that means: this must be his contract year.

Anyway, he's got the longest streak of consecutive games with an extra-base hit so far this season (with 9) and it's still going:

You have to go back to 2006 to finder a longer streak than Damon's:

Shout out to Peter Abraham for mentioning Damon's streak in the first place.

Damon has also scored a run in each of those 9 games. Only 4 players have had longer streaks since 1954 (all were 10 games): Chipper Jones (2006), Bobby Abreu (2005), Ken Griffey Jr (1993), and Don Mattingly (1987). Griffey and Mattingly's streaks both included 8-game HR streaks. Abreu hit HRs in 9 of the 10 games in his streak (first 5 and last 4), with 2 doubles in the game in which he did not homer.

Damon could become the 5th with a 10 game streak tonight.

  2. JohnnyTwisto Says:

I am surprised there has not been a longer run-scoring streak.

  3. leatherman Says:

There are longer run scoring streaks. I was talking about streaks where the player had an extra base hit AND a run scored.

  4. JohnnyTwisto Says:

    Oops, my bad.

It appears the longest run-scoring streak since '54 is Kenny Lofton with 18 in 2000. Not unlikely there's a longer one perhaps from the 1890s or 1920s or '30s.

  5. leatherman Says:

And Damon makes it ten in a row with a double and a run scored.

Lofton's run streak is the longest since 1954. Jim Thome had a streak of 17 to start the 2006 season, which is impressive in its own right.
