Ryan Howard’s 4 extra-base hits
Posted by Andy on June 19, 2010
Yesterday Ryan Howard had 4 extra base hits in the Phillies' game against the Twins. Here are the most recent players to have at least 4 extra-base hits in a game:

There have been 97 such 4-XBH games since the 2000 season. Of those, only 17 have included a triple. Among those 17 is Howard's performance from yesterday. How crazy is that? If I told you Ryan Howard missed the cycle by one type of hit, how many of you would guess he'd miss by a single instead of a triple?
A few other things:
- Kelly Shoppach is the last guy to have 5 extra-base hits in a game. Note that Shoppach also had an intentional walk in that game, and it didn't even go to extra-innings!
- Both LaRoche brothers did it last year, within a couple of weeks.
- Teams have won the last 14 games when one of their players gets at least 4 XBH in the game, but they lost 5 in a row before that, and won 27 in a row before that.
- The last guy to do it from the 8th place in the batting order was Damian Miller in 2006.
- The last guy to do it from the 9th place in the batting order was Tomas Perez, also in 2006.
- Within the PI box score years, no National League player has ever done it from the 9th place in the batting order.

One thing I looked up after his game was people who hit for the cycle and had a 2nd home run (Howard was a single away). The PI knew of four players: Joe DiMaggio, Carl Yastrzemski, George Brett, and...
Greg Colbrunn.
It made me mad.

That's a hell of a good trivia question...what do DiMaggio, Yaz, Brett, and Colbrunn have in common?
BTW I won't publish your email address, Nate, but your username is preposterous.

Howard was in the on-deck circle when the last out of the 8th inning was made. With the Phillies ahead by 6 at the time, it didn't look likely that he would get a chance to hit that single. But the way the bullpen let the Twins back into the game in the top of the 9th, it began to feel like he'd get the chance after all. Can you imagine Howard leading off the bottom of the 9th in a 9-9 game or one in which the Phillies were trailing and only aiming for a single? Neither can I!

The AOL name? Yeah, I was 17 when I made that one up.

There were two pinch-hit home runs in extra innings in tonight's Twins-Phillies game (one by each team). Anyone have any idea how often that has happened?

3 catchers on the list (historically the slowest) and no centerfielders (one of the faster positions)

There have been four pitchers who had 4 extra-base hits in a game, but none since Babe Ruth had 3 doubles and a triple for the Red Sox in a 10-inning game on 9 May 1918. Hasn't happened in the NL since 20 Apr 1895 (Kid Gleason, 2 doubles and 2 triples - I believe this is the same man who went on to manage the 1919 Black Sox).

I didn't really think it was possible for the Phillies to go into the top of the 9th at home with 9 runs and at least a 5-run lead and then have to worry about hitting in the bottom of that inning.
