#2 Toregas has actually been quite productive despite hitting only singles, driving in 6 runs in just 33 at-bats. Very nice.

It was amazing that Gallego appeared in 2 more seasons after his awful 1995, including a 1996 season in which he got even more plate appearances and managed to hit even worse (OPS+ of 34) despite hitting 2 doubles.

Who has the most plate appearances with ONLY extra base hits? I remember reading somewhere how Carlos Pena has more home runs than singles at this point.
September 2nd, 2009 at 12:11 pm
Rick Wrona in 1995, and Dixie Howell in 1957, both had 5 extra base hits with no singles. That is the most HITS with no XBH in a season.
In 1991, Charlie Liebrandt had 85 plate appearances with 3 extra base hits and no singles. That was the year he went 0-2 with a 11.25 ERA in the World Series, too.

You gotta love Wrona's 328 OPS+ for the year with the 5 extra base hits.

Wow, Jason Smith not only doesn't have any extra-base hits, he doesn't have any hits period...or walks! In fact, his OBP is .000. His season of 27 PA without getting on base is the most for a non-pitcher since 1936. Including pitchers, just last year Jay Bergmann set the record with 42.

And to think that a couple of years ago, I was saying that the Phillies should go out and get Jason Smith! Why? Because the Flyers and 76ers had also just gotten players named Jason Smith!
