In addition, a couple dozen previously undiscovered play-by-play accounts have been added for more recent  seasons and numerous bugs have been fixed both in our scripts and in the retrosheet data.

Please let us know if you come across any bugs or things that need to be fixed.

Pitchers with 100 career RBI and runs scored

28th March 2011

Yesterday I noted that Bob Feller finished his career with both 99 runs scored and 99 RBI. Not very many pitchers have reached the century mark in both categories:

There are quite a few more pitchers who did it pre-1950, when pitchers got a lot more plate appearances in a season.

Since Steven Carlton, only one pitcher has reached 100 career runs or RBI, and that's Greg Maddux with 103 career runs scored.

Among active pitchers, Mike Hampton (who actually just retired) leads the way with 97 runs scored, followed by Carlos Zambrano with 64. For RBI it's Hampton with 79 and Livan Hernandez with 78.

Yeah, Frank Robinson sure was worn out at age 30 in his first season after the Reds got rid of him. Just look at all those bold numbers.

Is Kevin Millwood really that bad?

Kevin Millwood finally has a team after signing a minor-league deal with the Yankees. I'm surprised it took him so long to find a job.

Yeah, in 2010 he had just an 82 ERA+ and 16 losses, but check out the list of the most recent guys to do that:

This is not a list full of stinkers. Yeah, there are a lot of guys who led their league in losses (see bold numbers). But then there are some guys like #8 Verlander, #13 Cain, and #17 Webb who had excellent OPS+ against numbers and still racked up the losses. Quite a few other names on this list put together good careers and had many other good seasons.

Don't get me wrong--I'm not suggesting that Millwood is a #1 or #2 type guy, especially at his age. But he's a pretty good bet to be solid, pitch a lot of innings, go relatively deep into games, and be a good guy to fill the back end of a rotation. Given that he ultimately agreed to a minor-league deal, I'm surprised some team didn't throw a couple of million bucks at him to make him a #5 starter.
