Early fireworks in Chicago: Drew Stubbs and the Reds are crushing home runs

Posted by Andy on July 4, 2010

The Reds crushed 7 home runs against the Cubs today, including 3 by Drew Stubbs (as well as single homers by Corky Miller, Brandon Phillips, Jonny Gomes, and Paul Janish.)

Amazingly, the Reds have cornered the market on 7-homer games. They now have the last 4 in MLB:

The Cubs have been brutalized in 3 of those games.

The Cubs have also cornered the market it allowing 7 HR, having been victims to three of the Reds' last four assaults.

I am a Reds fan. Can we schedule it to have Cincinnati play the Cubs 150 times a year?

  3. Gonzo Says:

Wow. How many 8-hole hitters have ever hit multi homers in a game?

  4. DavidJ Says:

Speaking of the Reds, how on earth did Joey Votto not get selected for the All-Star game? Ryan Howard gets in ahead of him? I sure hope Votto wins the final-man vote; if not, this will go down as one of the worst All-Star snubs ever.

  5. BSK Says:

It looks like it was only 3 times for the Cubs. The 4th was the South Siders.

I'm not a subscriber so I can't post a full list, but according to the non-subscriber summary the Play Index contains 529 instances of No. 8 hitters with two or more homers in a game. There have been eight such events so far in 2010, including a three-homer game by Toronto's John Buck in a late-April game against Oakland.

    So it's not especially rare.

    In answer to #3

    I don't know about other # 8 hitters getting 3 homers, but what about a # 9 hitter?

In the ALCS Post Season game 5 on October 13 vs Minnesota Twins, Adam Kennedy hit 3 homers from the # 9 batter slot.
