Giving up 6 homers at home

Recently the Yankees became the first team of 2009 to give up 6 homers in a game at home:

There has been much discussion about the Yankees' new ballpark and whether it is going to continue to yield homers at a record pace. Time will tell on that.
The good news is that some of these teams were still playoff teams. An isolated bad game doesn't determine a team's fate for the season, of course.

Good news for whom? 🙂 That game seems to have been a wake-up call for the Yankees, they haven't lost since.
This made me wonder what team gave up the most HR and still won the game (in the Retrosheet era, of course). It's happened twice for 7 HR: on 2004-08-08, Boston won 11-9, and on 1995-05-28, the White Sox won 14-12. Interestingly, in both cases the team that had the 7 HR was Detroit. It's likely these are the most HR given up in a win for pre-1954 as well.

Considering those two Tigers games Whiz referenced (which were both played in Detroit), I was thinking that perhaps they had a bunch of solo shots, and were beaten by opponents who jacked ones out with ducks on the pond. That wasn't completely the case. Ten of the Tigers 14 HRs were solo shots, three were with 1 runner on, and one was a 3-run blast. Not surprisingly, their opponents (BOS, CWS) hit 8 homers of their own in those games (3 by the BoSox and 5 by the ChiSox). But to my surprise, they weren't better at slugging with men on - 7 of the opponents 8 homers were solo blasts (the other had 2 men on).
So the real difference was the non-homer production. 19 of Detroit's 21 runs in those games were driven in by homers, while only 10 of their opponents' 25 runs were. Take away the homers, and the Tigers are outscored 15-2 (6-0 vs BOS, 9-2 vs CWS).
