Most home runs in a game since 1957

Posted by Andy on August 1, 2007

The Yankees hit 8 HRs in their game against the White Sox last night. ESPN.com news services reports that:

"The last time the Yankees hit eight homers was June 28, 1939 against the Philadelphia Athletics. Joe DiMaggio and Babe Dahlgren hit two each in that contest."

The PI cannot search that far back, due to the lack of complete box score coverage. However, here are all the games since 1957 in which one team has hit 8 HR:

Last night's Yankees game is #3 on that list.

There are a few interesting things about this list:

  • All of the teams hitting 8 or more HR won, most in blowouts, although last year the Braves just barely beat the Cubs 13-12. If you look at the box score for that game, you'll that the Braves 8 HR were one each by Brayan Pena, Marcus Giles, Ryan Langerhans, and Andruw Jones, and two each by Edgar Renteria and Adam LaRoche. Amazingly, the Cubs scored 12 runs without hitting a single homer! In fact they had just 3 extra base hits in the game, but they did rack up 16 hits, 4 walks, and a hit-by-pitch.
  • Game #14 on that list is amazing too. Boston hit 8 HR but scored only 9 runs. There were 7 solo homers and 1 two-run job to account for all the runs. (I would have to guess that 7 solo homers in a game is a record.) The homers included one each by Jim Rice, Butch Hobson, Bernie Carbo, and Carl Yastrzemski, and two each by Fred Lynn and George Scott. In the game, the Red Sox had "only" 11 hits and 2 walks, and no other base runner. They had no extra base hits other than the 8 HR.
  • I'm assuming it's Game #2 on that list that has the most different players (eight) homering for the same team in one game. The Reds hit 9 in all, including two by Eddie Taubensee, and one each by
Jeffrey Hammonds, Peewee Reese, Greg Vaughn, Mark Lewis, Aaron Boone, Brian Johnson, and Dmitri Young.

Peewee(sic) Reese in 1999 for the Reds? That should be Pokey.

    How true.
