Drew Storen, National hero

Posted by Andy on June 13, 2010

Stephen Strasburg just got a huge boost from Drew Storen, who relieved Strasburg with the bases loaded and registered two outs to close out the inning. I did some quick math and came up with a Game Score of 63 for Strasburg, but that number could have gone all the way down to 51 had the inherited runners scored. Mind you, 51 is still not a bad score--it's average for 2010 so far.

I did a quick search and found 76 other pitchers to have a Game Score of at least 63 in each of their first 2 games.

Only Melton and Spooner had as many total strikeouts as Strasburg.

  1. Jim Says:

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't your statement of a 51 game score being average for 2010 a little redudant? Isn't game score based on 50 being average

  2. DavidJ Says:

Carrying over from his first start, Stasburg struck out 19 batters before issuing his first walk. I'm wondering what the record is for Ks to start a career before walking a batter . . .

  3. Johnny Twisto Says:

Jim, theoretically an average Game Score should be around 50, but it can vary. Average in '68 was 57.

  4. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

Is my PMS {remember, that stands for Pre-Mature Senility} kicking in, or is Mr. Juan-derful {Marichal} the only one on this list to translate this kind of start into a Hall of Fame career? Maybe this kind of start only really succeeds if you follow it up swinging for the fences at a catcher's noggin.

  5. Johnny Twisto Says:

I completely forgot Sam Militello got off to such a great start. He was one of the bright hopes for the Yankees during those lost years.

  6. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Jerry Garvin (#28 on Andy's list) accomplished the feat in 1977 for the first-year Blue Jays. I was twelve at the time, and I sure got my hopes up about him. (-;þ

  7. DoubleDiamond Says:

Seeing the name Joe Coleman in this list, I wondered which Joe Coleman it was, since there was a father/son pitching duo with that name. The son was probably the last young pitcher to be developed with high hopes by a Washington, DC-based major league team before Strasburg. And indeed it was the younger Joe Coleman (officially not Joe Coleman, Jr., because of different middle names, but sometimes referred to as such). Before he could do much for the second Senators, he was sent to Detroit in the Denny McLain deal.

  8. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

    To Double;

The Joe Coleman on the list was indeed the son; I forgot about him being in the McLain fiasco, though. All I remember about him is how he managed a winning record later on as a reliever for the expansion Blue Jays -- then got cut.
