First 2 Games – Both Starts Each with 34.7% BF K’ed

Posted by Raphy on June 13, 2010

In the first start of his career, Stephen Strasburg became the first player in the current PI era (1920-1939, 1952-2009)  to begin his major league career with a start in which he struck out at least 50% of the batters he faced. Although he was not as dominant in his second start, Strasburg still struck out 8 of the 23 batters that faced him. Strasburg becomes the second player in the current PI era to begin his major league career with 2 games, both starts in which he struck out at least 34.7 % of the betters faced in each. The first was Karl Spooner, whose name will be forever linked with amazing baseball beginnings and careers that might have been. I don't know how accurate they are, but it is interesting to note the number of pitches that are credited to Spooner.

Nice! This is a bit off topic but I curious to know how many pitchers have pitched at least 7+ innings without striking out anyone and still getting the win. It's probably happened a lot before the 1940's but I'm more curious about recent players. Morrow had a recent game where he pitched 7 innings, got the win, and struck out only 1 so that's why I thought about it.

On a totally unrelated topic (as there isn't a good place at all for this and it's a current issue, I'm putting it on the newest post) the White Sox-Cubs game currently has dueling no-hitters into the sixth innings. What are the longest that both teams have no-hitters (or maybe even better, perfect games)?

  3. Gerry Says:

For what it's worth, in 1976, two pitchers had complete game, 10-inning wins without any strikeouts; Jerry Augustine, 24 August, and Randy Jones, 30 May. I don't think anyone has done that since, but many pitchers have pitched 9 innings, struck out none, and got the win - about 25 in the last 20 years.

    Nice, thanks Gerry.

To Wandering -- you mean, besides the double no-hitter between Two-Ton Toney and Hippo Vaughn, right?

  6. Josh Says:

    To Mark:
He didn't go 7 innings, but on May 23rd of this year Josh Johnson went 6 innings against the White Sox without a single strikeout and got the win.
