RESULTS: Stat Challenge Week 7 (Spring Training)
Posted by Andy on May 24, 2010
Here are the results for our final exhibition contest. As you probably already know, starting next week the contests count for prizes.
Answers:
1. Total games in which one pitching staff allows 2 or fewer hits: 2

2. Total first-inning runs scored by the Minnesota Twins: 11. This was crazy. The Twins scored in the first inning only twice in the last week, but totaled 11 runs thanks in large part to 7 first-inning runs in this game against the Brewers. (They scored 4 in the first the next day.)
3. Total naps, umm I mean plate appearances, for Ken Griffey Jr, SEA: 14

Baseball is, as they say, a young man's game. Price, Gonzalez, and Cueto each won twice in the last week, plus 4 of the wins came in relief appearances.
We had interesting results this week.
- Numerous people guessed question #1 correctly, however there were no correct guesses on ANY of the other FOUR questions with the exception of Elkboy and Chad getting #3 on the button.
- For the first time in the stat challenge, every single entrant under-guessed one of the questions--number 5. Looking back at it, I might have worded the question in a confusing way. When I said the pitcher needed to be "24 or younger" I meant that the number assigned to their age needed to be a 24 or lower number--in other words that they qualify by B-R methods of being in their Age 24 season or younger. Sorry if that confused anybody.
- For the first time, we have a clear winner by several points:
The official results:
1. Josh W 15 (3)
2. Elkboy 19 (3)
3T. Jon 20
3T. Koma 20 (3)
3T. Johnny Twisto 20 (4)
Wow, lots of repeat winners this week.
Congrats to BSK also, who joins the 4 people above with 3 wins in the spring training period of the Stat Challenge.
I declare the overall winner to be Johnny Twisto!
Now on to where the games count. We are giving away a 6-month Play Index membership to each weekly winner starting with the new Week 1.

It is a great honor to be the spring training champion. I think the key was playing our starters in "B" games, but don't overlook all the bases we tried stealing against rookie league catchers.

Well done, JT. I hope our shared success can continue into the REAL season. Though if I keep guessing like I did in #5 (I picked 3... what???) I don't know if I will continue to join you on the podium. Good luck to all!

I like to say 2 things:
1. i think the right answer to Question Nr. 5 is 18 since Daniel Bard turns 25 on June 25, so his seasonal age would be 25.
2. if you apply the new points system (giving 10 to the best and so on) you get the following spring training Top 10
Josh W. 26
Elkboy 22
Jahiegel 21,67
Johnny Twisto 21,34
Mark 19,6
BSK 18
Brian O 15,67
Koma 14,67
KennO 12
Spartan Bill 10,5
the differences result from the fact that you counted only the Top 5 but with the new system points there are rewarded 10 contenders.
Counting the Top 10 Finishes JT leads the pack with 5 in front of only Jahiegel with 4 followed by 7 with 3. "Best-of-the-rest" is Spartan Bill with the best-ranked 2 Top 10 results.
So my congrats to
Josh W. - best under the new ranking system (see above)
Johnny Twisto - most Top 5 and Top 10 rankings (4 respectively 5)
Mark - lowest total difference by far (151)
Elkboy - lowest single difference (2 in week 5)
And now let´s compete in the real season:)
greets
Koma
