Results: Week 2 Stat Challenge (spring training)
Posted by Andy on April 20, 2010
OK, here are the answers to last week's questions:
1. Total number of hits for White Sox as a team: 56 (this ended up being pretty interesting as they had two games with 14+ hits and one game with 1 hit!)
2. Total number of relief pitcher appearances for the Dodgers: 25
3. Total number of walkoff wins in regulation by all teams (i.e. wins inthe bottom of the ninth inning): 5

4. Total RBI for Ryan Howard, PHI: 4
5. Total plate appearances for Jose Reyes, NYM: 35 (this number was boosted by the 20-inning game)
The top 5 scores for this week (with lowest score being best) were:
1. Jahiegel - 15
2. Mark - 17
3. BSK - 18
4. Dunnowhat2type - 22
5. Johnny Twisto - 23
Both Jahiegel and BSK nailed the White Sox' 56 hits exactly. Dunnowhat2type was the only person to guess as high as 30 for Reyes' plate appearances.
By averaging all of the guesses and then scoring them, we come up with a score of 34. Only 9 entries actually scored better than 34, showing the power of average thinking.

Thanks for keeping this up andy- I hope it can continue through the season. Lots of fun, and gives me something to think about for a bit monday mornings.

It would be sorta nice to link to the original challenge if it isn't too inconvenient, as I would like to be able to have quick access to my own predictions, but it's not that big of a deal.
I also hope this can continue throughout the year, as I'm really enjoying these contests.

By my count I scored 12 for week 1 and 39 for week 2, leaving me with 50. I wonder if there can be some regular standings posted so I can see how close (or more likely how far) I am from the leaders.
Thanks for all the time you put into this Andy
Also for Wandering and the others, ehre is the link to our earlier guesses.

I, too, must add my thanks to Andy for his spending what one imagines to be a good bit of time on this; it is great fun.

I second the notion for an overall leaderboard. I have a 16 for week 1 and a 22 for week 2, total 38. I'd like to see the lowest possible scores.

I'll nth the requests for overall leaderboards, and a link back to the original post. Assuming that most people are going to miss a week or more at some point, it would be cool if you could come up with some way to include everyone on the leaderboards, maybe ranking them by percentage of total points in all the weeks they actually entered. Not sure what would the most equitable way to do that.

if you assign Zeros to everyone who doesn´t guess (so that week 2 question 1 for example would result in 56 points) we get following Top 10
1. Jahiegel 28
2. Mark 32
3. Scott K 36
4. Johnny Twisto 36
5. dunnowhat2type 38
6. Koma 46
7. WanderingWinder 46
8. Mstew 48
9. RichardKC 49
10.Spartan Bill 50
if you instead assign everyone not guessing the worst score of the week we get this one
1. Jahiegel 28
2. Mark 32
3. Scott K 36
4. Johnny Twisto 36
5. dunnowhat2type 38
6. WanderingWinder 46
7. Koma 46
8. Mstew 48
9. RichardKC 49
10.BSK 49

the lowest possible score is 0 if guessed right every single question, but if you count the weekly best score it would´ve been 24, meaning Jahiegel beeing almost perfect.
in later rounds there maybe should be void results, meaning that the 1, 2 or more worst results do not count in your total result
