Lunch with a Legend

Posted by Sean Forman on February 22, 2010

Sean Forman and David Neft

David Neft (r), head of the first Macmillan Baseball Encyclopedia.

Last Thursday, I had the great pleasure of being invited by Marty Appel to attend the monthly baseball writers' lunch started 20 years ago by Lawrence Ritter. The authors of 100+ books were at the lunch, and another guest was David Neft, the head of the Big Mac, Baseball Encyclopedia. We got to share notes and exchange stories about how our separate projects got off the ground. David is still at work putting together a major set of biographical data for NFL players.

The caption says Neft is on the left but that's a mistake. On the left is Sean Forman.

    Awesome Sean!

There was a time where I thought Big Mac was the most important book that I owned. I used to refer to it as “The Book of Knowledge” and held it like it was the baseball torah or something…drove my wife nuts.

BTW, someday, YOU and I have to do lunch, and then I can have our picture taken, and do a blog entry entitled "Lunch with a Legend." 😉

And the lunch was at Mickey Mantle's on Central Park South - always like to point out the venue, because it's perfect for our group. Great to have you there Sean!
