Who Am I Now?

Posted by Raphy on February 22, 2010

Today you get 2 Who Am I's for the price of one:

My name is a 4 word alliteration.
As a player, I played 4 different positions, but I never lived up to my first name.
My major league pitching career lasted less than 50 games, yet the most similar pitcher to me was a Hall of Famer.

Who am I?

I got it. I won't post the answer and spoil it for anybody else, but if you want another clue, I'll just say that I got using the first clue only.

  2. Billy Says:

    Homer Hillebrand?

  3. Raphy Says:

Homer Hiller Henry Hillebrand it is!

Out of curiosity, how did you get it? Or did you just know it?

  4. Jeff J. Snider Says:

Wow, I've never heard of Homer Hillebrand, but I just discovered that he is buried in the same cemetery as all of my dead relatives, about a mile from the house I grew up in. I wonder how long he lived there...

  5. Andy Says:

    I got Raphy's puzzle by using the search box on B-R.com. I put in "a a a a", then "b b b b" and as soon as I put in "h h h h" the answer popped up.

If you knew that Sisler pitched in the majors, then the third clue would be a big help.

  6. Gerry Says:

5 positions - pitcher, 1st, left, right, and catcher - no?

  7. Raphy Says:

Gerry- You're right. I was working off the player page which doesn't split the OF positions. I forgot that the information is available on the Fielding page.

I hope that this didn't throw anyone off.

    Thanks.

I hadn't heard of him, either. I thought for a moment that he did hit one homer, but then I realized that I was looking at his pitching record, in which he gave up one dinger!

I also see that he was one of those pitchers that throw left and bat right. There aren't that many position players with this combination, but there seem to be a lot of such pitchers. I've even read that the guy who is probably now the most famous bats right, throws left position player, Rickey Henderson, started out as a pitcher.

  9. Billy Says:

Oh, yeah, I just knew it. LOL

No, my first reaction was, "It's obviously some guy named Homer" because of the second clue. I entered "Homer" into the search box, and 15 or so names popped up. I wasn't going through each one of them, so I was done. Then I say Andy's comment about getting it from the first clue only. At first, I thought he was referring to clue about "not living up to the name", but then I realized that I was missing the "4 word alliteration". I went back to the list of Homers, and obviously, Hillebrand stood out.

    Correct, Jeff Snider
