Best & Worst Inherited Runner Scoring Percentage
Posted by Andy on August 29, 2007
Using a number of basic PI Batting Season Finder searches, we can find out about which relievers have done the best and worst allowing inherited base runners to score.
First, here are the top 25 performers so far in 2007. Criteria are 80% of games in relief and minimum of 20 inherited runners. (If there is no minimum for inherited runners, then Kyle Farnsworth comes out on top since he always starts innings....heh.)

It's pretty interesting. Frank Francisco has allowed just 2 of 40 inherited baserunners to score, which is fantastic, but he's not having a great season otherwise, with a very high walk rate. Brian Shouse is having a very nice season, allowing just 9 of 63 runners to score and putting together nice numbers in addition. And check out all the relievers on this list with sub-2.00 ERA's so far this year: Carlos Marmol, Rafael (Nuno) Betancourt, Kevin Cameron, Hideki Okajima (the likely AL ROY winner, in my opinion, if Dustin Pedroia doesn't steal too many votes), and Rafael Perez.
And here are the worst 25 so far in 2007, using the same criteria as above:

It really goes to show you, huh? Randy Messenger has pretty decent numbers this year. He's got a fairly high WHIP (1.44) for such a low ERA (2.62) and the data above explains part of the reason why: a bunch of those hits he allowed scored inherited runners that he was not charged with. Of 35 inherited runners, 17 have been allowed to score. There are a number of other scary performances on that list.
Since the year 2000, here are the top individual seasons for inherited runner scoring, using the same criteria again (80% of games in relief, minimum 20 inherited runners):

For McBride and Almanza, this stat is a beacon in an otherwise dark season.
Raising the bar to minimum of 40 inherited runners, here are the top 10 seasons since 2000:

Again it's a mixed bag. Ricardo Rincon makes each of the last two lists, although neither season was particularly remarkable. In 2004, Javier Lopez allowed just 6 out of 46 runners to score, but of course he also allowed 34 earned runs of his own in his 40.2 innings pitched. Ouch.
Raising the bar one last time to 60 inherited runners yields this top 10:

Now you're starting to cook with gas. A player making this top 10 list must be pitching pretty effectively a large fraction of the time (60 inherited runners means a minimum of20 appearances, and that's only if the bases are loaded each time) and indeed none of these 10 guys had truly bad years. Most were quite good for middle relief.
In some circles, a lot has been made over the last few years of Mike Timlin's rate of allowing inherited runners to score. I went back and figured them out, by going to his gamelog pages and using the sum function by clicking on the first and last rows to sum for each season (there might be an easier way to do it elsewhere):
2003: 12 out of 45 score (27%)
2004: 22 out of 52 score (42%)
2005: 18 out of 32 score (56%)
2006: 9 out of 26 score (35%)
2007: 4 out of 16 score (25%)
The sample sizes are all small here so I think it's dangerous to try to conclude too much, but he definitely had a blip in 2005.
By the way, I noticed that Timlin is just 2 games shy of 1000 for his career. He'll be just the 13th member of that club when he joins.

Good lists. Seeing Bobby Seay's name gives me an excuse to point out his recent claim to history. Getting the win on Sunday, Seay ended his streak of 116 consecutive game appearances without a decision. I read somewhere that this was a record for the past 50 years.
