Zontini was second in Virginia in hurdles in 1968 after setting the state collegiate indoor low hurdles record in 1964-1965 and competed in the NCAA Regionals as a track-and-field athlete. He also played basketball. He hit .392 as a college junior and .352 as a senior. Until 1985, he held the Old Dominion record with two home runs in a game. He was All-Mason-Dixon Conference all three years in baseball. Signed by the Kansas City Royals, he hit .309/.395/.449 for the 1969 Kingsport Royals, though he only fielded .806 at third base, where Al Cowens edged him out for playing time. Had he qualified, he would have been .004 shy of the Appalachian League top 10 in average. He slumped to .164/.246/.291 in 23 games the next year for the Waterloo Royals and had as many errors (7) as runs and RBI combined. Overall, he had hit .267/.353/.403 with 29 runs and 26 RBI in 76 games as a pro, with 8 steals in 10 tries. He fielded .788 in 33 games at 3B, .930 in 10 games at 2B, .818 in 8 games in the outfield and had 3 putouts at catcher. He coached the College of William and Mary in 1974.
