Talk:Carl Johnson

From BR Bullpen

This should be a disambiguation page. This page can be moved to Carl B. Johnson while the links for the minor league manager can point to another entry. - --Mischa 09:08, 29 November 2007 (EST)

Doyle lists several Carl Johnsons, none of whom strikes me as being any more notable than the others -

Carl C. Johnson, minor league pitcher 1935, 1937

Carl Johnson, minor league pitcher and manager 1938-1949

Carl W. Johnson, minor league pitcher 1942-1946

Carl Johnson, minor league pitcher 1954-1960

Carl B. Johnson, minor league pitcher 1987-1998

Carl Johnson, minor league position player ?-1925; at least two years in AAA

There doesn't seem to be a need for a disambiguation page when only one of them actually has a page. If you would like to make it a disambiguation page and move this Carl to Carl B. Johnson, I would certainly not argue the point. My only issue with that is that he wasn't known as "Carl B. Johnson" during his career, just "Carl Johnson". We also couldn't use Carl Johnson (minors) since they were all minor leaguers. Maybe Carl Johnson (1987-1998) would be best. Kinston eagle 12:57, 30 November 2007 (EST)

Sandy Alomar wasn't known as "Sandy Alomar (alomasa01)" throughout his career either, but to make room for his son we have a disambig page. Carl Johnson is a relatively common name, so the "Carl Johnson" page becomes the landing page for "Carl B. Johnson". --Jeff 13:18, 30 November 2007 (EST)

For Alomar, you're not supposed to read the part between brackets; it's a disambiguation code. Could I suggest labelling them Carl Johnson (minors01) through Carl Johnson (minors06) respectively. This would avoid using the unusual middle names or middle letters and will allow for future Carl Johnsons to fit in smoothly by taking up the next available number until they make the major leagues. The disambiguation page should make clear who's who (see Pat Kelly for example). --Philippe 01:25, 1 December 2007 (EST)

Not a bad suggestion at all. Only problem I see is that we don't always know how many other minor leaguers we're looking at, we kinda would hafta rely on Mischa or somebody else with the minor league database, and then we still wouldn't know about very early guys. The Pat Kelly example looks really good BTW. --Jeff 01:32, 1 December 2007 (EST)

I have no problem with the Pat Kelly format for handling this. Kinston eagle 08:57, 1 December 2007 (EST)

Take a look at my user page: User:Kinston_eagle and let me know what you think. Under this set up, this KTribe player would be Carl Johnson(JohnsonCa06) and the only other Carl Johnson that has been mentioned in the Bullpen, the minor league manager would be Carl Johnson(JohnsonCa03). If there's no objection, I'll change everything tonight or tomorrow. Kinston eagle 09:07, 1 December 2007 (EST)

I think it's good but I would still use (minorsxx) instead of (JohnsonCaxx). The first Carl or Calvin or Cassius Johnson to play in the majors will be johnsca01 and there's a risk of confusion with the first minor league Carl Johnson. Just my suggestion based on a number of years of work with both the Bullpen and the main BR site. I would also list the middle name or middle initial where known: Carl Johnson (minors01): Carl Williams Johnson, minor league player from etc. And of course, you can always use pipes in any actual text (e.g. [[Carl Johnson (minors01)|Carl Johnson]]) to get rid of the unwieldy brackets. --Philippe 10:18, 1 December 2007 (EST)
