Biographical Information

Seong-hoon Jeong has played for the South Korean national team a couple times.

Jeong made his debut in 1999 with the Haitai Tigers and hit .292/.349/.407. In 2000, he batted .260/.302/.326 in 119 games for Haitai. The team was renamed the KIA Tigers in 2001, he hit .280/.331/.410 but only played 49 games. Back in regular duty in 2002, Jeong produced at a .312/.376/.465 clip and stole 16 bases. He did not play enough to qualify for the batting title; he would have ranked 7th in the Korea Baseball Organization in average. He was even better the next year, when he joined the Hyundai Unicorns after a trade for Jae-hong Park and hit .343/.397/.509. He had 338 at-bats and failed to qualify for the batting title, or he would have ranked second to teammate Dong-joo Kim.

Jeong batted .266/.350/.366 for the 2004 Unicorns. In 2005, he hit .266/.346/.426 with 17 homers and 72 RBI. He played for South Korea in the 2006 World Baseball Classic and went 0 for 5 as a backup infielder. In the 2006 campaign, he hit .291/.369/.447 for Hyundai. The next season, he batted .290/.357/.467 with 29 doubles, 16 circuit clouts and 76 RBI.

Jeong was pressed into regular service for the Korean team in the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament when starting third baseman Dong-joo Kim left early in the event to be with his sick mother. Jeong was just 2 for 16 with a double and steal, but did drive in four (3 against Germany). South Korea earned a slot in the 2008 Olympics.
