Outright

(Redirected from Outrighting)

A player is outrighted or sent outright to the minor leagues when his major league club assigns his contract to a minor league affiliate and removes his name from the 40-man roster at the same time. A player sent outright to the minor leagues must first clear waivers if his team wants to bring him back at a later date. If he has a certain amount of service time accrued, he can refuse the minor league assignment and opt to become a free agent instead.

Outrighting a player is in contrast to sending one on option, in which case he remains on the roster and can be recalled after ten days have elapsed or earlier if he replaces a player who was placed on the injured list.
