Biographical Information[edit]

Orelvis Avila was the ace of the pennant-winning Holguín in the 2001-2002 Serie Nacional, going 14-7 with a 2.87 ERA. In the finals, he failed to record an out in a game five loss to Ifreidi Coss. In game seven, he got the start again and tossed a shutout into the 9th inning before running into trouble and needing to be rescued by Oscar Gil.

Avila was with the Cuban national team for the 2002 Intercontinental Cup, going 1-0 with 7 shutout innings. In the 2002 World University Championship, he tossed a shutout of Team USA in the Gold Medal game, blanking a lineup with Aaron Hill, Carlos Quentin, Rickie Weeks, Conor Jackson, Michael Aubrey and Eric Patterson. On the tournament, he was 1-0 with a tourney-leading 2 saves and a 0.66 ERA to win MVP honors.

Avila had a 0-0, 0.00 record in the 2003 Pan American Games, his last stint with the national team. Through 2003-2004, his career record in Cuba was 63-79 with a 3.98 ERA and .280 opponent average.
